(11 sep. 1911, Bolsháia Tes, Yeniseysk, Imperio ruso–10 mar. 1985, Moscú, Rusia, URSS).
Líder soviético. Se incorporó al partido comunista en 1931 y ascendió hasta convertirse en jefe de gabinete de
Leonid Brézhnev (
1964). Fue miembro pleno del comité central desde 1971 y del Politburó desde 1977. Conservador de la vieja guardia, fue considerado por algunos como el seguro heredero de Brézhnev, pero fracasó en su intento por sucederlo en 1982 como líder del partido. En 1984 asumió tras el fallecimiento de
Yuri Andrópov. Sin embargo, muy pronto su debilidad física se hizo patente, lo que hizo pensar que su elección había sido una medida provisional. Murió al año siguiente.
